General Background:

Kathie has been involved in dog training for over 20 years. She was active in competitive obedience and taught pet obedience before agility. In 1989, when Kathie was an active duty Air Force non commissioned officer, she discovered agility. Her first competition dog was Spirit, a Shetland Sheepdog who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in January 2002. Kathie and ADCh Spirit MX EAC EJC EGC CDX TDI started their agility career in USDAA, earning a semi finalist spot regularly and placing 3rd in 1992. After a brief break from agility to serve a tour of duty overseas, Kathie & Spirit returned to the sport and won the USDAA National Championship in 1997, when Spirit was a seasoned veteran at 10 years of age!

Kathie also handled her 25” Golden Retriever Gage to USDAA, NADAC, and AKC agility titles before retiring him in 1998.

Kathie’s next competition dog was MACH7 ADCh Heather LAA-Bronze PT TD. Heather and Kathie achieved a remarkable record together. They were two-time AKC National Champions (1999 & 2000) and two time Reserve Champions in 2004 and 2005. They earned their way into the USDAA Grand Prix finals in 1999, 2000, and 2002; they won the 2004 Performance Grand Prix and placed second in the 2006 Veterans Grand Prix. They earned a place on the AKC / United States Agility Team five times. They medaled three times: in 1998 in Slovenija, where the USA Mini Team won the Gold Medal, the first-ever medal earned by a US team in international competition; in 1999 in Dortmund Germany, they placed fourth in the overall individual competition, at the time, the highest individual placement by a US Mini competitor at the FCI World Championships. At the 2000 competition in Helsinki Finland and the 2002 event in Dortmund, Germany, Kathie led the US Mini Dog Team to repeat silver medals. For what its worth, no US small dog team has earned a team medal since Heather and Kathie left the team in 2003.

Following close on Heather’s heels is MACH2 ADCH Dash PT. Now retired from competition due to visual difficulties, Dash is now ten years old and continues to express her opinion about the younger dogs in the household on a regular basis. Kathie also trains and handles her husband's Golden Retriever Kayla in both AKC and USDAA where she has earned her MX, MXJ, and AD titles.

Kathie’s current competition dog is MACH Strathspey Little Big Man, XF, AAD. Gryphon is a 5 year old Sheltie and they are currently competing in AKC and USDAA. Kathie and Gryphon have competed all across the US and have even travelled to Italy to compete in the 2007 European Open Agility competition where their 3 dog team placed 7th in a very competitive small dog category. Most recently, Kathie and Gryphon won the 2009 High Combine International Sweepstakes Class at the Houston Kennel Club shows, earning them an invitational to tryout for a spot on the American Kennel Club sponsored United States Agility Team.

The most recent addition to her pack is "Shout" (Rockstar Can U Hear Me Now), a beautiful little tricolor Sheltie who is already keeping everyone in the house on their toes and certainly living up to her call name!

Kathie has been the Assistant Coach for the American Kennel Club United States Agility Team for the past 3 years, helping to guide the team to success in International competition since 2006.

Kathie retired from the Air Force in 1998 to devote all her time to her agility career. She is a full time dog trainer, focusing most of her teaching on the sport of agility. She is a sought after seminar leader and has been an instructor at the prestigious Power Paws Agility Camp as well as the Clean Run Agility Camp in Virginia. These days, on most weekends you will find her at AKC or USDAA agility trials and in between she runs Touch & Go Agility near Sacramento, California. Kathie is also an AKC agility judge. She enjoys teaching agility seminars around the country.
